St. Nicholas University DVM Students Shine with Hands-On Experience

At St. Nicholas University, we believe in learning by doing. Our DVM program is designed to provide students with real-world experience, preparing them to be exceptional veterinarians. This week, our DVM 3 students had an incredible opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a practical setting.

Spica Splint Success Story

Two adorable stray dogs, Maya and Lilac, found their way to our on-campus animal rescue in need of urgent care. With injuries requiring specialized treatment, our DVM 3 students stepped up to the challenge. Under the guidance of our experienced faculty, they successfully applied Spica splints to the injured dogs putting their newfound knowledge into practice and providing much-needed relief to these furry patients.

What is a Spica Splint?

Spica splints offer crucial support for injuries involving the patients with selected musculoskeletal abnormalities. Spica splints are most commonly used for temporary immobilization of the shoulder or elbow following open or closed fracture reduction, particularly when surgery is delayed or the patient requires transport before fixation. By mastering this technique, our students are gaining essential skills that will serve them throughout their veterinary careers.

A Pawsitive Impact

We’re incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and compassion. This hands-on experience is invaluable in building their confidence and expertise. We’re also grateful to our animal rescue team for providing this opportunity.
